Personal Fitness Instruction
The Courthouse Athletic Club and our staff of Fitness Coaches are here to help you make physical activity an enjoyable part of your lifestyle. For help in developing or updating your personal fitness program you should schedule an appointment with your Fitness Coach at the club’s service desk.
Check With Your Physician
We congratulate you on your decision to take an active step towards improving your level of health and well-being. Before you start on a new exercise program, please see your physician if you are over 40 and have been sedentary for a year or more; or if you have any of the following risk factors: cardiovascular disease, a family history of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated blood cholesterol, obesity, high level of stress, or if you are a smoker.
Club Usage
A Private Club
The Courthouse Athletic Club is a private club. Only members and their guests are allowed to use the club. To gain admittance to the club you must check-in at the service desk and scan your club key tag. If you forget your key tag you will need to wait for the service desk staff to look up your account and check you in. Members who repeatedly fail to bring their key tag or lose their key tag will be issued a new one and charged a $2 replacement fee.
Club Use By Guests
Members are allowed to bring guests, but guest usage by any one individual is limited. Guests are required to pay a fee to use the club, just as members are required to pay dues. The charge to members for bringing a guest is $6 per person, per visit.
Limits On Guest Usage
There is no limit on the number of times a member may bring a guest to the club. We do however, limit the number of times the same guest uses the club on a guest pass or by paying the normal guest fee. Limits are imposed as follows:
- If a guest is a Salem/Keizer area resident, the member is charged the regular guest fee of $6 for the first five visits of each particular guest each calendar year. For additional club visits by the same guest members are charged an additional guest fee of $9 ($15 total). After five visits guests are also not eligible to use a guest pass of any kind.
- If your guest is not a Salem/Keizer area resident there is no limit on the number of times they may use the club by paying the normal $6 guest fee for each visit.
Miscellaneous
- Smoking is not allowed within the club, the club entry areas or confines of the sun deck.
- The Courthouse is closed on the following holidays: Easter, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas. These and any other closures will be clearly posted at the clubs.
Account Information
E-Bill
The preferred method of payment of monthly club dues and charges is E-Bill. Ask at the service desk for complete information about E-Bill procedures. There is a monthly manual billing charge for all other forms of payment. Manual payment may also be made in person at the service desk, or mailed to P.O. Box 3125, Salem, Oregon, 97302. Payment is due in full by the 10th of the month. All accounts not paid in full by the 10th will be assessed a late fee of $10.
Late Payment
Any member who allows their account to lapse by 30 days will have all membership privileges suspended. Suspended members must pay all current account charges if they wish to use the club. Members are still responsible for any dues that accumulate while their membership is suspended.
Charging Privileges
For membership accounts paid by E-Bill, heads of households automatically receive charging privileges. Children on these accounts may also receive charging privileges by submitting written notification.
Leave Of Absence
Members may take a leave of absence from the club under the following guidelines:
- The necessity for a leave must be due to a medical situation that makes the member physically unable to use the club, or for continuous travel beyond 50 miles of the club. As a result, the member must be unable to use the club for a minimum of three months.
- A leave of absence fee equivalent to approximately 20% of regular dues will be assessed for each month a membership is on leave. This fee may be paid in advance or can be billed monthly. When able to return to regular club usage, the membership will be reinstated at no cost.
- Leave Of Absence request forms are available at the club service desk and must be submitted in advance.
Resignation Of Membership
A member may resign their membership only by issuance of written notification. Ceasing to use club facilities will not be considered as notice of intent to resign membership, nor will ceasing to pay monthly dues. Written notification must be submitted in person on a club form, or sent by certified mail. For memberships that are month-to-month in duration, notification must be received by the last day in order to make resignation effective at the end of the month in which notification is given.
Children
Limits On Children’s Use
It is expected that young members will use the club in a manner similar to that of adult members. Typically, adults stay at the club for two hours or less. Young members are encouraged to use the club likewise, and not use the club as a place to “hang out”. It is for this reason that the club limits the visit of members under the age of 16 to a maximum of two hours per day.
Exercise Equipment
Children under 11 years of age are not allowed in the weight training or cardiovascular equipment areas under any circumstances. Member’s age 11 to 13 years are allowed to use the weight and cardiovascular equipment, but only when directly supervised by their parent or club instructor. We recommend parents consult with a Fitness Coach before starting a child under age 14 on a weight-training program.
Classes
Children may participate in group exercise classes if they are able to participate in the entire class. Children should be in the class as participants, not spectators.
Pool & Spa
Parents must directly supervise children under the age of 16 while in the pool or spa area. Children are welcome to participate in lap swimming and other aquatic activities as long as they are supervised and are participating in an adult manner.
- Life jackets, scuba equipment and small flotation toys are restricted to family swim times.
- Running, jumping, diving, pushing and other horseplay is prohibited in and around pools.
- Parents must accompany, in the water, children under the age of 7 when using the spa.
Children Visiting But Not Using the Club
Whether a child is a member or not, he or she is expected to be involved in a structured club activity, or to be directly supervised by their parent or a club employee. One of the most commonly misunderstood areas of the club is our policy regarding direct supervision of children by parents while using the club. When we refer to direct supervision we have in mind undivided attention. It is not possible to give your undivided attention to a child while you are involved in a racquetball game, group exercise class, weight training, lap swimming, etc. Many people have asked, or assumed, it would be fine to station their child nearby while they go through a workout. They feel an occasional glance is all the supervision that is necessary for their child to be safe and out of the way of others. In most cases, if we are just dealing with one child, they are absolutely right. However, if we allow one parent this privilege, we would have to allow all others the same privilege. This sort of policy would undoubtedly lead to many more children being left to entertain themselves around the group exercise area, weight room, etc. We feel this would lead to children disturbing other members and eventually causing an injury to themselves or others. Therefore, we require that every child visiting the club, but not making use of it themselves, regardless of their age, be supervised by our child supervision staff while parents workout.
Court Reservations
Members may reserve one court at a time up to seven days in advance. This means that if you play today you may reserve a court for no later than the same day next week when you are done.
Dress
Gym & Court
Gym & Courts
Shirts must be worn at all times. Please use only shoes designed for court sports. Use of other shoes can be dangerous, and can also leave marks on the courts. Members are responsible for any damage they may cause to the courts due to the use of improper shoes by themselves or their guests. Proper court or gym attire must be worn.
Pool & Spa
A suit designed specifically for swimming is required. Cut-offs or exercise apparel is prohibited. Loose or dangling jewelry should be removed prior to entering the pool. Cover-ups for swim wear and shoes are required outside the pool, sun deck and locker room areas. The club is not responsible for swimwear that fades or wears due to use in club pools, spas or Suitmates.
Cardio, Strength & Group Exercise Rooms
Clothing and shoes designed specifically for exercise is required. Street clothes are not allowed.
Locker Rooms
Day Lockers
There are several day use lockers in each locker room. These lockers are available for members and guests to use while they are in the club. Locks left on these lockers will be cut off at the end of each day. Items left in these lockers will be removed at the end of the day, bagged, dated and left at the service desk for the owner to claim. As with lost and found items, these items will be kept at the desk for 30 days, after which time they will be discarded.
Private Lockers
Private lockers are available for a monthly fee of $6.
Miscellaneous
- The club cannot take responsibility for lost or stolen articles. It is the responsibility of each member and guest to properly secure their valuables. Avoid tempting potential thieves, and make sure your valuables are safe.
- We cannot hold valuables at the service desk. Please do not ask us to keep your wallet, watch or other personal items while you workout.
- Please do not leave damp sweaty gear in your locker overnight.
- Children age 4 and older are not allowed in the locker room of the opposite gender. Changing areas are provided in each pool area if needed for older children.
- Cell phones are not to be used in the locker rooms. Increased technology that enables cell phones to take pictures can place personal privacy at risk.
Towels
If you wish to make use of a club towel on a regular basis you may sign up for monthly towel service for a fee of $4 per month. This service entitles you to one towel per visit. You may also rent towels on a per visit basis.
Tanning Beds
Be careful when using tanning beds. If you have never used a tanning bed be sure to start out with shorter visits and build up slowly to longer visits. Appointments for the tanning beds must be made at the service desk. When you are ready for your appointment you should notify the service desk. If you are late for your appointment you may not be allowed to use the entire time you have reserved if it will make the person who has reserved the tanning bed after you late also. A no-show fee of $3 will be assessed to anyone who does not make use of a reserved tanning appointment. Tanning rooms will have the necessary towels and cleaners so you can clean the bed when you finish. Ask at the service desk for information on cost.
