What is Pilates?
Pilates (pih-lah-teez) n. 1. An exercise system that uses spring-driven machines as well as a series of floor movements to increase strength, flexibility, stamina, and concentration. 2. Joseph H. Pilates, 1880-1967, noted German inventor of the Pilates exercise method, originally called “Contrology.”
Pilates is a sytematic approach to exercise that works the whole body in strength, flexibility, stamina, and balance in the right combination for our personal goals.
Pilates will leave you more energized, not drained and tired, with a stronger connection between your body and mind. Your increased body awareness will accompany you outside your workout, improving how you stand, walk, and perform everyday activities. Today, Pilates is a respected form of exercise from the medical community to high profile athletes, such as Tiger Woods and Gregg Oden; yet is safe for any age or ability.
How is Pilates Different?
Pilates Equipment is what sets Pilates apart from other forms of exercise. There are over 500 exercises you can perform with 5 basic pieces of equipment: the reformer, the cadillac, the wunda chair, the ladder barrel, and the mat. Together a person can perform exercises that are individualized to their needs and goals. The pilates equipment was created to help give people the assistance they need to improve their body. Every exercise has a strengthening component and flexibility component, and your instructor will help you you benefit from the component you need most for each exercise. Pilates is corrective exercise and when done within this systematic approach, your individual fitness progress is maximized.
Is Pilates For You?
Pilates is simply the greatest single exercise with the most benefits you can do for your body in the least amount of time. Pilates is a combination of personal training, bodywork, and physical therapy; you will gain many of the benefits of all three in one workout!
Pilates is for people who place a high value on health and believe in the preventative effects of exercise for health care. Like bodywork thereapies, Pilates is an investment in your health and can save you money and body aches in the future.
Pilates is for people who have physical limits but not mental limits on what they can do. A bad knee, hip, shoulder, lower back, or neck all can be worked with by following the Pilates system and using modifications of the exercises.
Pilates is for people who want a different kind of challenge, one for their body and mind. Exercise routines are individually tailored to your specific needs, whether you want to lose weight, tone up, improve your posture, decrease low back pain, or increase flexibility and your instructor is there to help you achieve them.
People can return to a state of health experienced when they where younger by reversing many effects of aging by increasing flexiblity, strength, balance, and endurance.
Pilates is for people who want a toned and strong body, gaining the benefits of weight bearing exercise needed for osteoporosis.
Pilates is for people who believe in a holistic approach to exercise. By working out the whole body we can often correct muscle imbalances, misalignments, and gradually improve overall well being.
Results
Results are amazingly fast to obtain and long lasting. People will first experience an improvement in their posture. Some people experience a dissipation of their fatigue and even some of their chronic pain.
Long term results are what keeps clients coming back for more -- your "Anti-Aging Pill"
Pilates helps stave off the effects of growing older by keeping us more flexible and limber, improving our posture, keeping our bones healthy, strenghtening our core, and reversing our repetitive stress. And because Pilates is considered non-impact it is extremely easy on your joints yet is still considered "weight bearing" exercise, so it is good for bone density too.
